Celebrating 175 Years of Grand Rapids | Past to Present

Since the late 1990s, Grand Rapids has been on a journey of growth and innovation seeing incredible transformation. What was once a downtown centered around Calder Plaza defined by vacant buildings and a focus on the financial sector, has now grown into a vibrant and expanding city center.

Past developments like Founders Brewing and Van Andel Arena helped shift the heart of the city south, expanding and defining the Central Business District — bringing new life to the city.

Since 2015, Grand Rapids has gained a reputation for its entrepreneurial spirit, business diversity, strong community values, and a culture that fuels growth.

Today, downtown Grand Rapids is a blend of local charm and national presence, with thriving businesses, entertainment venues, and active nightlife. Areas like Ionia and Monroe show small businesses growing alongside major developments.

The Amway Grand Plaza, Grand Valley State University, JW Marriott, Van Andel Institute, and DeVos Place now shape the skyline and contribute to Grand Rapids’ economic and cultural strength.

Looking ahead, we believe in the power of reinvestment — keeping local dollars in the community and supporting one another. As public and private partners work together, we have the chance to build a future that’s sustainable, inclusive, and uniquely Grand Rapids.

Together, Grand Rapids is building a future where progress and community go hand in hand. With continued collaboration, we’re excited to see Grand Rapids grow in a way that benefits everyone who calls it home.
